Martin’s Blog 31st July

We head to Wolverhampton tonight with our Racing Club Flat Horse, Happier, partnered by Jack Doughty who was a good 2nd on her on her first run for our yard. She’s not let herself down on the turf the last two runs so hopefully she will appreciate the return to the all weather. She’s in good form at home and let’s hope Jack finds the key to her again and goes one better. Good luck to all.

Still no rain and everywhere is pretty desert like! We keep having promises of rain but nothing comes of it. Therefore we are feeding haylage in the fields too when there should still be plenty of grass … which is free! Frustrating. A bit of a breeze helps keep the flies away and it is definitely cooler than Wednesday but rain please!

Pike Road ran well for a long way at Uttoxeter on Sunday but stopped as if his wind is possibly stopping him from finishing off his races. Ben Brain will have a look at his wind in an overground scope and we’ll see if he can help him at all. We did have a winner in our Horsebox coming back from Uttoxeter though – Dominic Elsworth & Ryan Hatch’s Emerald Time hitched a lift back with us as they had Horsebox issues and we dropped him off for them at their Naunton base. Always good to help another yard out – Kim Bailey/Mat Nicholls and Ben Pauling’s yards helped us out last season when we had similar issues at Kempton and both dropped a horse back for us which was hugely appreciated. A close knit community and we all like to help eachother out when we can.

We are in the first week of the jump racing summer break but plenty going on in the yard and some new horses arriving too which is always good news and exciting.

David Maughan and Paul Davis in first thing this morning to watch the horses on the gallops and have a catch up. Earlier in the week we’ve had visits from Tim & Karen Clink too – a lovely time of year and always exciting looking to the season ahead.
