Martin’s Blog 23rd April

A very solid run yesterday at Stratford from Young Phoenix returning from his winter break and given a good ride by Tom Bellamy, settling him mid field. We all started to get quite excited approaching the last as he came to challenge however he pecked badly on landing and Tom did well to keep the partnership together. He looked certain to be in the first three before that mistake but eventually finished 6th. However, his owners were rightly thrilled with him as was I and we look forward to his next run.

A fun day at Stratford with owners and friends and they should be given credit for a change in food policy moving away from food vouchers and instead trusting owners and trainers to help themselves and not be too greedy! A mention is definitely required here for Wendy Rollason who works at Stratford as part of her racecourse portfolio. Once again Wendy went above and beyond the call of duty when later in the afternoon to ensure a delicious plate of sandwiches for owner Liz Prowting, who was being entertained, as were we, by her trainer Richard Phillips (we were also planning a question for Freddie to ask him as part of his #FreddieAsks series!). Wendy is always a huge help to our owners at Cheltenham too.

Freddie was thrilled to have his letter about Pony Club Pony Racing published in the Racing Post yesterday and they even found a photo of him and his pony Bubbles from Twitter to add to it too! Freddie is keen but very nervous and he was keen to share his experience so far of how encouraging and helpful everyone involved in pony racing is and if it encourages just one person to have a go at it who wouldn’t have already done so then that would be fantastic.

After the sunshine over the weekend we left some of the horses out overnight last night and they were looking chilled and relaxed when the team got them in shortly after 6am after their night under the stars. Our horses get turned out nearly every day anyway and I’m sure it keeps them happier and hopefully heathier too.

Normal busy Monday here – Physio Maggie Turner here along with Farrier Nick Partridge. Lots of entries this week so horses to be checked to make sure they are all A1.
