Martin’s Blog 22nd February

Work morning and Paul Davis and Pip Frankish in to watch the horses on the gallops. Warren Marston in too and we worked Big Nasty, Back On The Lash, Duke of Luckley, Melekhov, Pay The Woman, Herecomeshogan, Breizh Alko, Love of Neymore, Blazing Court, Kalibrate and Ten Past Midnight. Lots cantered and more horses back in from their winter breaks probably pleased to be in from the wind and the rain!

Steve Harman was in yesterday to watch Kalibrate put through his paces and to catch up with us all and it was great to see him. Kalibrate was one of three yearlings we bought three years ago and is by far the biggest but, to our surprise, has been the one who has taken training and is going to be our first runner of the three. He’s quite imposing and has always reminded me of Champion Court and indeed comes from the same stud – Boardsmill Stud. Let’s hope he gives us as much fun as Champ has!

Spanish Present makes his debut for the yard and for owner David Maughan today at Market Rasen in a bumper. It’s a small field but by no means an easy race as there are a few nice sorts in the race. We like him a lot and can see why he caught Gerry Hogan’s eye – he’s done nothing wrong since he joined us and it would be great if he could build upon the promise he has showed in bumpers in Ireland.
