Martin’s Blog 16th October

A really fun day at Hereford yesterday where we received a warm welcome and the atmosphere didn’t change from friendly all day. Delicious food too so thanks to Rebecca Morgan and her team for ensuring our owners had an enjoyable day.

Chequered View ran a blinder up in grade and even without the shuddering mistake that completely knocked the wind out of her sails three out, I don’t think she would have won. A good 2nd and jumped really well in the main, a mare who is improving and has a lovely attitude.

Cut And Run was the horse I fancied the most but she dropped away disappointingly during the final circuit and I feared the fibrillating heart she has suffered from before may be the reason. However, a post race veterinary check revealed nothing and Richard Johnson, Zara and myself think she’s purely in need of a holiday. She’ll go home in the next few days and has had a good season with her awesome Bangor win the highlight.

Finally Miss Antipova needed to show something for us to continue with her – she’s been such a buzzy mare and hasn’t given herself a chance but Paddy Cowley got on well with her and eventually switched her off and got her concentrating. I was keen for her to finish galloping and that she did, staying on to nearly grab 4th at the line and delight owners Alan and Anna Varey. We’ll look for a Mares’ Maiden Hurdle somewhere in the next few weeks and see if we can improve again on that.

No runners today and the horses went for a hack around the village, through the woods and just one canter up the bank for a change.
