Martin’s Blog 11th June

Three runners this afternoon at Southwell where Shinji is our first runner of the day for a new partnership made up of current owners Matt Capp and Leigh Powell and new owners Paul Newman and Michael Day. He is partnered, as they all are, by Sean Bowen and will hopefully give his new syndicate plenty of fun.

Peel Racing Syndicates’ Amberelli is a huge price in the 2m 4 1/2f Maiden Hurdle but she will hopefully build on her hurdling debut and run another solid race. Last but not least is Helen Sugden’s Release The Kraken who, until tiring, had run a really decent race at Uttoxeter. He’ll strip much fitter for that run and should be thereabouts today.

Last Saturday marked the end of the point to point season and Freddie, who turned 16 on 29th February, has really enjoyed the 3 1/2 months of pointing that he has been able to be a part of. He’s been so fortunate that Peter Boggis allowed him to point to point Mr Mafia after gifting him to us when he retired from Rules racing and Paul Nicholls allowed Freddie to have Sametegal too – two amazing 15 year olds who have taught him so much. Mr Mafia has been crying out for quick ground and we thought we’d be spoilt for choice as the season drew to an end. However, 2024 has been very different and it simply hasn’t stopped raining so Saturday was the first proper time Mafia got his preferred quick ground. We went to Umberleigh in North Devon for a Novice Riders Race and he loved it, running an absolute belter, beating the favourite but unfortunately a 33-1 shot beat him into 2nd so it wasn’t quite the fairytale ending!

However, Mr Mafia owes us nothing and finished in one piece for a proper retirement and was given a huge round of applause in the winners’ enclosure after the raceday presenter said some lovely words about his career. Freddie won a trophy for the best performance by a young rider – a beautiful trophy! In addition to that trophy, Freddie has won West Mercian Area Champion Novice Gentleman Rider and also the West Mercian Novice Ride of the Year awards and Sametegal has won WM Area Champion Family Horse so a fabulous first season.

We were thrilled that Peter Boggis came with us to Umberleigh despite eldest daughter riding in the Bramham 4* Horse Trials and was competing in the Cross Country phase at exactly the same time that Mr Mafia was racing – poor Peter! However, after he’d dried his eyes following Mafia’s fabulous performance and retirement he heard the amazing news that Kitty King (& her 15 year old Vendredi Biats) had won Bramham – their final Olympic Trial – wonderful news. Fingers crossed now for Olympic selection – Kitty is the most dedicated and modest person we know and deserves all the success she gets, as do her supportive parents Peter & Jane.

Shares are going quickly in our impressive flat race winner Continuance and we think we are down to the final share so do get in touch if you don’t want to miss out on the fun!
